        Sericulture Department, Manipur is headed by the Directorate of Sericulture located at Sangaipat, Imphal. It was established in 1991. Head of the Department is the Director, Sericulture, assisted by one Joint Director, Principal and three Deputy Directors. All the districts are headed by District Sericulture Officers.

         Under the Sericulture sector there is a State Training Institute at Kwakta, Bishnupur headed by a Principal and one Silk Reeling & Spinning Factory at Sangaipat, Imphal. They provide common Facility Centres for reeling, twisting, spinning, design development and weaving.

                 There are 10 Tasar extension centres at Imphal East, 2 in Tamenglong, 2 in Bishnupur, 6 in Churachandpur, 5 in Senapati, 4 in Chandel, 1 in Thoubal and 3 in Ukhrul district. In case of Mulberry extension centres, there are 3 in Imphal East, 1 in Imphal West, 2 in Bishnupur, 3 in Churachandpur, 3 in Senapati and 1 in Ukhruldistrict.There is 1 Ericentre in Imphal East, 1 in Churachandpur and 1 In Ukhrul district. There is only one Mugacentre at Imphal East.

            TasarGrainageCentres are located at Gwaltabi, Andro, Chingarel of Imphal East; Khonghampat in Imphal West; Dolang and Noney in Tamenglong; Boijang, Geijang, Bungmual, B-Keljang in Churachandpur; Taphou and Phayang in Senapati; Lambung in Chandel; and Hundung and Toushem in Ukhrul district.

                  MulberryGrainagecentres are located at Khonghampat, Khurkhul, L. Vaiphei, L. Khunou of Imphal West; Wangbal and Thongjao in Thoubal district.
EriGrainagecentres are located at New Alipur, Heingang and Gwaltabi of Imphal East District; Tekcham, Umathel and Uyal in Thoubal district.

           Technical service centres are located at Laphupokpi, Heingang, Sagaolchabi in Imphal East district, Langol, Lamdeng, Arapti, Samurou in Imphal West; Ngangkhalawai in Bishenpur district, Kwatha in Chandel district, Phundrei, Kekru and Wangkhem in Thoubal district

Our Vision

To provide necessary framework for advancing goals and priortizing strategies for the development of Sericulture & Silk Industry to become a major silk producing State.

Department’s Mandate

  1.  Matters relating to technical support & motivational inputs to Sericulturists for Sericulture Development.
  2. All Matters relating to :
    ♦ Popularization of Sericulture as a means of earning and employment generation.
    ♦ Matters relating to Legalization of silk worm egg production e.g. seed quarantine and expansion of Silkworm food plants cultivation.
    ♦ Extension programmes for demonstration and manufacturing on Silk Reeling and Spinning & follow up action.
    ♦ Production of silk yarn, dress materials & furnishings and Export & import of the same.
    ♦ Conservation of Environment through Sericulture activities.
    ♦ Conservation of Environment through Sericulture activities.
  3. Matters related to Central Silk Board for implementation of programmes/Projects for development of Sericulture Industry in the State. Certification of pure silk through SMOI (Silk Mark of India) to promote production of pure silk fabrics for earning foreign exchange.

Department’s Mission

  1. Promotion & development of Sericulture & Silk Industry as an effective socio-economic tool for employment generation in rural areas.
  2. Infrastructure and technical support for production of saplings of silkworm food plant and its plantation and silkworm seed.
  3. Promotion of appropriate & latest technology of sapling raising & plantation of silkworm food plants, silkworm seed, silkworm rearing, silk spinning and silk reeling.
  4. Facilitate marketing of sericulture products at the optimum market price.

Department’s Goal

  1. To promote extension & development, guidance and strengthening of support system for sericulture & silk Industry.
  2. To promote for value addition of the silk produces within the State for added livelihood and higher earnings to the people.
  3. Introduction and imparting latest technologies on Sericulture.
  4. Support for market of Sericulture produces.
